Peptide face cream: how to choose

Why a peptide cream is formulated differently from a serum, how to read its INCI and what to check before buying.

Macro di una superficie bianca a micro-rilievi, a richiamare la texture ricca di una crema ai peptidi

A peptide serum and a peptide cream are not the same product with different textures. They serve different formulation purposes. Understanding this helps you avoid buying two products for the same reason.

The practical difference: what does a cream do that a serum does not?

A serum is a light formula designed to absorb quickly. A cream remains on the skin and completes the routine: alongside its active ingredients, it has a lipid component that helps limit water loss and soften the surface.

In practice, with a serum you consider primarily what it contains; with a cream, how it is formulated also matters. Excellent ingredients will not make a cream useful if its base does not suit your skin and you do not enjoy using it.

Reading a peptide in a cream's INCI

The same rule applies as for a serum: the international ingredient name matters more than the trade name. In ELAXO's Cream, for example, the peptide appears as Palmitoyl Sh-pentapeptide-17, or pentapeptide‑17.

The prefix gives the number of amino acids in the chain — penta means five, hexa six — and is not a quality ranking. We explain the rest of the list in how to read a cosmetic INCI list, and discuss peptides in how to choose a peptide serum.

What to look for in the lipid base

This often-overlooked part helps determine whether you enjoy using a cream. Common ingredients, also found in ELAXO's Cream, include:

  • Prunus amygdalus dulcis oil — sweet almond oil
  • Squalane — a stable emollient, now commonly derived from plants
  • Helianthus annuus seed oil — sunflower oil
  • Tocopherol and Ascorbyl palmitate — antioxidants that help protect the formula

There is no universally “best” base. What matters is one your skin tolerates and you enjoy applying every day.

Peptides, PDRN and exosomes in one cream

These three ingredient families are not mutually exclusive. PDRN is declared as Sodium DNA in the INCI. Plant-derived exosome ingredients are associated with the botanical names of their source plants; those names alone do not establish the nature of the vesicles.

In ELAXO's Cream, the exosome sources are watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi); in the Serum, they come from Centella asiatica. To understand what they are and what they are not, read facial exosomes: what they are and how they are used.

Five checks before buying

  1. The peptide appears in the INCI, under its full ingredient name, not only on the box.
  2. Consider its position in context. Ingredients above 1% are listed in descending order; lower concentrations may be listed in any order afterwards. Position does not establish exact concentration.
  3. Read the lipid base, not only the active ingredients: it influences how the cream feels on the skin.
  4. Check the Responsible Person. Every EU cosmetic needs an identifiable Responsible Person, CPNP notification and safety documentation.
  5. Question timed promises and improvement percentages without supporting studies.

Do you really need both serum and cream?

It depends on what you want. The serum offers a light step focused on selected ingredients; the cream provides the lipid base and completes daily care. For a simple routine, you can start with one; for both steps, apply the serum first and the cream afterwards.

There is no answer that suits everyone. Be wary of anyone who offers one without understanding your skin.

Frequently asked questions

Can peptide cream be used morning and evening?

Cosmetic formulas are intended for daily use, morning and/or evening according to their directions. Avoid direct contact with eyes and mucous membranes.

Do pentapeptide-17 and hexapeptide-12 compete?

No, they are different molecules. In a two-step routine, one is in the serum and the other in the cream.

Does a cream replace a serum?

They are complementary rather than interchangeable. A cream does not reproduce a serum's formulation, and a serum does not reproduce a cream's base.

How long before results are visible?

We do not promise a timeframe: it depends on the individual, consistency and the rest of the routine.

Key points

With a serum, the selected ingredients matter; with a cream, the base also matters. A peptide name on the box does not replace an INCI list, and list position alone does not establish concentration or efficacy.
