How to choose a PDRN serum — the ELAXO guide
ELAXO practical guide · updated September 2026
In just a few years PDRN has moved from aesthetic medicine clinics to shop shelves. Demand for cosmetics referencing PDRN has grown. To choose carefully, assess the label, the formula and the evidence available for the product. This guide helps you choose wisely, even if you don't buy from us.
1. Check the INCI name; do not infer concentration
The INCI lists the ingredients declared on the label. In the EU, ingredients present above 1% are listed in descending order; those at or below 1% may appear in any order after the others.
The position of Sodium DNA alone therefore cannot tell you its concentration or whether it is sufficient. Check the INCI name used for that formula and ask the brand whether it can share the percentage or available documentation.
What to do: check the full INCI and ask the manufacturer for formula-specific information. See our INCI guide.
2. Ask about the ingredient’s identity and origin
Ask the manufacturer where the ingredient comes from and which INCI name is listed. Terms such as “vegan PDRN” or “salmon DNA” do not, by themselves, verify a product’s composition or effects.
Ingredients from different sources may have different characteristics and documentation. Do not assume they are equivalent based on a marketing name; check the INCI and product-specific information.
What to do: ask the brand about the source, INCI name and supporting information it can provide.
3. Assess the full formula
Choosing a product does not come down to one ingredient. Read the full INCI, consider texture and directions for use, and check what evidence supports the benefits claimed for the finished product.
There is no universally best ingredient combination: compatibility and user experience depend on the whole formula and individual needs.
4. Check the product information
Cosmetics marketed in the European Union must comply with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Check the pack for required information, ingredients, applicable precautions and the Responsible Person’s details.
A marketplace’s location alone does not establish whether a product is compliant. If in doubt, ask the seller or manufacturer for verifiable information.
What to do: check the label and responsible person; consider certifications only when they are current, documented and apply to the manufacturer.
5. Assess claims carefully
Regulation (EU) No 655/2013 sets common criteria for cosmetic claims, including truthfulness and evidential support. A statement or image that communicates a benefit should be consistent with the evidence available for that product.
Do not automatically apply results from studies on ingredients, procedures or uses that differ from a topical cosmetic. If a brand gives specific results or timelines, ask which finished-product tests support them.
What to do: compare the promise with the information and documentation the brand can provide.
6. Compare quantity, directions and cost
Compare net quantity, price and directions for use. Cost per application can be estimated only when the dosage is clear and representative of real use; otherwise compare the price per millilitre.
The INCI position does not give an exact percentage for ingredients below 1%. Packaging and price do not, by themselves, prove concentration or formula efficacy.
Follow the PAO (period after opening) and the directions on the pack.
What to do: compare products using the same units and rely on declared information rather than estimating missing data.
The checklist, in short
- ☐ Check the INCI names and ask about declared ingredients
- ☐ Check the source and INCI name of the active
- ☐ Look for evidence relating to the finished product’s stated benefits
- ☐ Compare quantity, directions for use and price
- ☐ Read the PAO and precautions on the pack
- ☐ Assess the formula against your needs and tolerance
Three questions to ask any brand
- "Where does your PDRN come from?"
- "Can you send me the full INCI?"
- "Where is it made and with which certifications?"
A brand that answers all three directly deserves your trust. One that hides behind marketing does not.
Frequently asked questions
Can PDRN be used every day?
Follow the directions on the pack and consider the full formula: the presence of PDRN alone does not determine how often or when to use a product. If you have questions or reactive skin, seek advice from a qualified professional. Read the use and precaution information →
Can PDRN be combined with retinol, vitamin C or acids?
Generally yes, but the order and time of day matter. We wrote about it here (in Italian) →
Does a PDRN serum replace biorevitalisation?
No. A topical cosmetic and an injectable procedure are different ways of use and should not be treated as equivalent. For medical procedures, consult a qualified healthcare professional. About the procedure →
Are PDRN and polynucleotides the same thing?
They are related, not synonyms. The difference explained (in Italian) →
A note about us. ELAXO was born from the idea of two siblings. We formulate in Italy. Our PDRN is of marine origin — which is why we do not call our products vegan, even though it would be easier to say so. The exosomes in our formulas, on the other hand, are of plant origin.
We wrote this guide with the criteria we would use as customers. If it helps you, our job is done.
To review our formulas, see the product pages for N°1 PDRN Face Serum, N°2 PDRN Face Cream and The Ritual. The full INCI is printed on the packaging.
