Salmon DNA for the face: what it is and what it really does

What the salmon DNA used in cosmetics is, how it relates to PDRN and what it really does on the skin. Explained without promises.

The salmon DNA used in cosmetics is a fragment of genetic material extracted from salmon milt, purified and added to formulas. On the label it reads Sodium DNA, and when the fragments have a specific length it takes the trade name PDRN.

It is one of the most talked-about ingredients, often under curious names: "salmon sperm", "salmon DNA", "PDRN". Behind the headlines is a precise molecule, with a long history and two very different uses: injected, in a medical practice, and cosmetic, applied to the skin. Confusing the two is the most common mistake.

What salmon DNA in cosmetics is

DNA is the molecule that holds a cell's instructions. The DNA used in cosmetics comes from salmon milt — a by-product of the food industry — and is then fragmented, purified and made compatible with cosmetic formulas.

In the INCI it appears as Sodium DNA: the sodium salt of DNA. It is not a generic "fish" extract and it is not collagen: they are different things, even though they are often lumped together.

Salmon DNA and PDRN: how they relate

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide. It is DNA fragmented into chains of controlled length, typically between 50 and 1,500 bases. Put simply: all PDRN is salmon DNA, but not all salmon DNA on a label is PDRN, because PDRN requires a more thorough fragmentation and purification process.

The topic often overlaps with polynucleotides, which are close relatives but not the same thing: we explain it in Polynucleotides and PDRN: are they the same thing?

What a cosmetic with salmon DNA does on the skin

A cosmetic works on the outermost layers of the skin. In practice, PDRN formulas are appreciated because they help keep skin hydrated and comfortable and, with consistent use, help it look firmer and more elastic.

What a cosmetic does not do: it does not replace a medical treatment, it does not act in depth like an injection and it does not deliver results in a set number of days. Anyone promising that is writing a claim European law does not allow.

Injected or in a cream: two different paths

Injectable PDRN is used in a medical setting, with completely different costs and methods: in Italy a skin-booster session costs on average between 150 and 300 euros, and a course involves more than one.

The cosmetic is another route: daily, at home, without a doctor, with more modest and slower goals. The two can coexist, but they are not interchangeable.

Is it vegan? No, and it should be said

Salmon DNA is of animal origin. A product containing it cannot be called vegan, even when the rest of the formula is. There are plant-derived actives presented as alternatives: they are different molecules, with different documentation.

How to spot it on the label

Look for Sodium DNA in the INCI and check where it sits: ingredients are listed in descending order down to 1%, so the position tells you more than any slogan on the front of the pack.

Two useful questions before buying: is the active declared on the label or only in the advertising? And does the brand say where it comes from and who makes it?

How to use it

In a routine, serum goes on clean, still slightly damp skin, before cream. A few drops are enough, morning and evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is salmon DNA in a cream safe?

Cosmetics sold in Europe are subject to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009: before sale, every formula goes through a safety assessment and is notified on the European CPNP portal.

Can people allergic to fish use it?

The ingredient is highly purified, but with a confirmed fish allergy the choice should be made with your doctor.

Serum or cream?

Serum is more concentrated and absorbs quickly; cream stays on the surface and helps hold in hydration. Used together they do two different jobs.

How long before you notice anything?

A cosmetic should be judged with consistent use over weeks, not days. Anyone giving a precise date is promising more than they can deliver.
