PDRN has gone from aesthetic medicine studies to the shelves in just a few years, and the serums that mention it are multiplying. But not all are the same: some contain symbolic quantities, others call PDRN molecules that are not PDRN.
These are the seven criteria we use to evaluate a formula. They are valid even if you then choose another brand.
1. Check that the PDRN is really in the INCI
The INCI is the list of ingredients required by law, ordered by decreasing quantity. PDRN appears there as Sodium DNA or Sodium Polynucleotide.
If the label shouts "PDRN" but those names are not there in the INCI, the product does not contain PDRN. It also matters where it appears: if you find it at the bottom of the list, after the preservatives, position alone cannot establish concentration or efficacy.
Practical check: search for "Sodium DNA" in the INCI and look at the position. The list confirms declared ingredients, but does not reveal exact concentrations.
2. Ask about the origin — and be wary of “vegan PDRN”
Cosmetic PDRN is almost always extracted from the DNA of salmon or trout. Marine sourcing is common, but origin alone does not establish product efficacy or tolerance.
When a brand declares a "vegan PDRN", it is usually talking about polynucleotides of plant origin or synthesis: different molecules, with different scientific literature behind them. Marketing brings them together, chemistry does not.
Practical check: ask explicitly for the origin. A serious brand responds without beating around the bush. Here we explain the difference in detail →
3. See what's with the PDRN
PDRN should be assessed within the complete formula. Some formulas combine it with active ingredients that work on different fronts:
- Exosomes — vesicles that convey signals between cells and enhance the action of other active ingredients
- Biotechnological peptides — act on expression wrinkles
- Fermented active ingredients — contribute to hydration, comfort and luminosity
- Antioxidants — counteract the effect of free radicals
Practical check: consider a combined formula for a simpler routine; value and performance depend on the complete product, not the number of named ingredients. Learn more about biotechnological peptides →
4. Check where it is produced
A cosmetic sold in the European Union must comply with Regulation 1223/2009: have an identifiable Responsible Person, CPNP product notification and a product information file (PIF).
Products purchased on non-EU marketplaces often skip these steps. It doesn't automatically mean they are dangerous, but if something goes wrong it may be difficult to identify a compliant EU Responsible Person.
Practical check: make sure the product is manufactured according to GMP, the good cosmetic manufacturing practices described by the ISO 22716 standard. The brand should be able to tell you this. Korean or Italian PDRN: how to really choose →
5. Texture and tolerability: see the whole formula
An anti-ageing serum is used every day: it must be absorbed well, not leave a sticky film and be well tolerated over time.
PDRN works in your favor: it does not photosensitize and does not usually require a retinol-like adjustment period periods, unlike other anti-ageing active ingredients. It can be used morning and evening, all year round.
But beware of a common mistake: the tolerability of a product does not depend on its main active ingredient, it depends on the entire formula. A serum with a very delicate active ingredient may contain high-level alcohol or perfume with allergens.
Practical check: search the INCI for the entry Alcohol and see what position it is in, and check for the presence of the most common perfume allergens — Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Limonene, Alpha-isomethyl ionone. They must be declared by law. If you have reactive skin, still test on the crook of your arm before applying to your face. PDRN or retinol: the comparison →
6. Be wary of claims that are too beautiful
In Europe, Regulation 655/2013 requires that cosmetic claims be truthful and demonstrable. Some formulations are prohibited because they promise drug-like effects:
| 🚩 Alarm bell | ✅ Correct wording |
|---|---|
| "Botox effect" | "Visibly smoothes expression lines" |
| "Regenerates cells" | "Supports the renewal of the skin's appearance" |
| "Eliminate wrinkles" | "Visibly reduces the depth of wrinkles" |
| "Results guaranteed in 7 days" | "With constant use the skin appears progressively more uniform" |
It also applies to images, not just words: before/after photos are the most persuasive and easiest claim to construct. How to read a before and after →
Practical check: If a brand promises miracles in a week, it is selling you an expectation, not a cosmetic. And if he promises you a specific date, ask him what test he bases it on.
7. Evaluate the price per application, not the price on the label
The price on the label says little until you know how long the bottle lasts. And the duration is not a fixed number: it depends on how many drops you use and how many times a day. Ask the brand for it, or measure it yourself: mark on the package the day you open it and the day you finish it.
Price differences between serums can reflect the concentration of the active ingredients, the quality of the packaging (protection depends on the packaging design and its compatibility with the formula) and the production controls.
One more check that almost no one does: compare the duration with the PAO, the symbol of the open jar with the number of months. If the bottle lasts longer than the PAO, you shouldn't use the last part of the product — and the real cost per month goes up.
Practical check: Divide the price by the days of actual duration, then decide if that number makes sense for you. If you are comparing the expense to that of a doctor's treatment, the numbers are on this page.
The checklist, in brief
- "Sodium DNA" appears in the declared INCI
- The origin of the PDRN is openly declared
- There are complementary active ingredients: exosomes, peptides, fermented
- The product is manufactured according to GMP (ISO 22716)
- You have read the entire formula, not just the main active ingredient
- The claims are measured, not miraculous
- The cost per day is sustainable for you
Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal concentration of PDRN in a serum?
There is no single "right" number. The quality of the raw material, the stability of the active ingredient in the formula and the synergies with the other ingredients count. A declared percentage needs context: raw material identity, stability and evidence for the finished formula matter.
Is PDRN serum or cream better?
Serum and cream can be complementary: a serum offers a lighter step, while cream helps retain hydration. Which to choose first depends on your skin and the specific formula. A serum is not automatically more concentrated because of its name. How to build the routine →
At what age do you start with PDRN?
There is no mandatory starting age. PDRN works on supporting the skin's natural processes, so it makes sense when the first signs of loss of firmness begin to appear — often between the ages of 30 and 40 — but it is well tolerated even before that and remains useful long after.
How long does it take to see results?
We won't give you a date, and we'll explain why: it depends on your skin, your age and the routine you had before, and a precise date should be demonstrated with a test. What we can tell you is the order in which things are observed: first hydration and comfort, then uniformity of tone, lastly firmness, which is the slowest to notice. Consistency matters more than quantity.
The three questions to ask any brand
- "Where does your PDRN come from?"
- "Can you send me the complete INCI?"
- "Where is it produced and with what certifications?"
A brand that responds to all three directly deserves your trust. Who hides behind marketing, no.
The ELAXO choice
The N°1 PDRN Face Serum ELAXO combines PDRN, Centella Asiatica plant exosomes and biotechnological peptides in a single formula, developed and produced in Italy in a laboratory that follows GMP according to ISO 22716.
Our PDRN is marine-derived: this is why we do not define our products as vegan, even if it would be more convenient to say so. The exosomes in our formulas are plant-derived.
